Why Small Milestones Are Important
I know 200 is a small number, but a couple of months ago, I had none. But, in fact, it’s not so small!
But I think that today we often forget to celebrate milestones. No matter the size.
Is it because someone we know has more followers than us? I’m not sure, but I seldom see people celebrating their “small” achievements. I frequently see “OMG, 100k followers”, “I’m so happy! I just got my 1mil followers!!” etc. Why is it not OK to be publically excited about 200?
Well, for me it is. I am super happy that an awesome bunch of 200 have chosen to follow my writing journey, who, I hope, I inspire.
I’m proud that in 2 months of writing on Medium, I got 200 people as my audience. I’m proud that I didn’t try Medium hacking techniques to get more followers. All these people chose to follow me for who I am and what I write.
Thank you! I’m truly happy and every follower makes my day!
Let’s celebrate our milestones!
Why are small milestones important?
They bring you to big goals. I doubt anyone ever set their initial milestone to be “I want 1mil followers”. Well, maybe Kim Kardashian did. But realistically, small steps bring you to big goals.
They show how much you have grown and progressed. I notice the progress in my writing and how much I’ve changed since the start. Having an audience motivates me to crack my head and deliver.
They show that reaching a goal is a journey. The more you work on something, the more you get. It just proves that big goals cannot be achieved if little work is done. I doubt I’d have gotten 200 followers if I had a couple of mediocre pieces written. It is a journey that takes time and effort.
They help you be creative. I’ve been experimenting on Medium. As a new writer, I have been struggling to find my voice. It’s natural. Reaching small goals has been helping me to shape my voice, understand what works better and what doesn’t.
They put a smile on my face. I smile when I get a new follower. It’s a new person who found my content valuable. It’s much more important than any Medium Partner Programme earnings — having an audience to write for is the best reward. Every person who follows me literally makes my day.
So don’t be ashamed that you reached your goal. No matter how big or small it is. It’s worth celebrating!
It’s a shame that few people shout loud and celebrate when you reach their digital marketing, ebook download or following goals. It’s not fair that we see those successful accounts that can be extra loud about their first million of new followers, and we tend to think that nobody will care about our 200.
That’s why many people give up on their dreams of running a blog, or having an awesome Instagram page or writing a book — gratification is important and let’s not be ashamed and instead be proud of our achievements. No matter the number — it’s unquestionable that the achievements are great!
In the end, tell yourself, I’ve progressed compared to yesterday, a week ago, a month ago, etc.
Cheers and thank you for following!
